Ahogy azt megszokhattuk, az efféle listák már november közepe óta érkeznek, de 2020-ban is érdemes volt az esztendő legvégéig várni, hiszen még december közepén is jelentek meg olyan remek anyagok, mint az Avalanches ausztrál DJ-producereinek We Will Always Love You-ja, Ryan Adams visszatérő Wednesdays albuma, az amerikai rapper Kid Cudi trilógiazáró Man On The Moon III: The Chosenje vagy a brit Paul McCartney szintén régen kezdett sorozatot folytató McCartney III lemeze. Jöjjön hát 2020-as éváttekintő összeállításunk, melyhez a korábbi közreműködők mellett a MusicPressnek nagy segítséget nyújtó további barátoktól is érkeztek listák.

A 2020-as év a márciustól leállt koncertélet ellenére is végig bőségesen szolgált új zenével, nemcsak a mennyiség, de a minőség terén is. A Gorillaz kollaborációs Song Machine projektje mellett az Avalanches fentebb említett retrofuturista kozmikus szerelem konceptlemeze kínálta a legnagyobb sztárparádét (Neneh Cherry, Terence Trent D’Arby, Leon Bridges, Tricky, Denzel Curry, Kurt Vile, Jamie xx, Blood Orange, Jane's Addiction-, Weezer-, Yeah Yeah Yeahs-, Superorganism- és MGMT-énekesek, a Clash-alapító Mick Jones, a Smiths-gitárhős Johnny Marr stb.), míg a korszellembe legjobban beletaláló csúcslemezek közül Amerikában a Run The Jewels fekete-fehér rapduó 4-es sorszámú albuma vitte a prímet (neves hiphophaverok mellett olyan vendégekkel, mint a 81 éves politikai aktivista gospel/blues énekesnő Mavis Staples, a popmester Pharrell, meg a Queens Of The Stone Age és a Rage Against The Machine frontemberei), de egy brit székhelyű produkció még náluk is zseniálisabb tudott lenni, duplán is.
A Sault nevű titokzatos afrobeat és funk beütésű neo soul kollektíva másfél év alatt kiadott négy fekete borítós albumából kettő esett 2020-ra: a bevételeivel jótékonysági célokat szolgáló Untitled (Black Is) volt a monumentális komoly black experience lemez, míg az Untitled (Rise) a táncos, felszabadult ünneplés. A magáról semmit el nem áruló, interjút és koncertet nem adó projekt mögött a brit producer Inflo (Dean Josiah Cover) áll, aki zeneszerzőtárs-producerként és dobos-billentyűsként dolgozott a legutóbbi Michael Kiwanuka-sikerlemezeken és a rapperlány Little Simz 2019-es Grey Area albumán (de besegített a hasonló habitusú Jungle együttesnek is), a két társszerző-énekesnője pedig a jamaikai-spanyol-szerb származású soul/R&B díva Cleo Sol (Cleopatra Nikolic) és az amerikai rapper-énekesnő Kid Sister (Melisa Young), akik közül az előbbi egy nagy-, az utóbbi egy kislemezt is felvett szólóban a Sault-anyagok mellett (szintén Inflo produceri segédletével).
Ami a veterán zenekarokat illeti, a Flaming Lips együttes – a Deap Vally-lányokkal közös Deap Lips projektlemez mellett – elmúlt bő egy évtizedének legjobb albumával állt elő (American Head), ahogy a Pearl Jam (Gigaton) vagy a Strokes is (The New Abnormal), de hasonlót mondhat el magáról például az ausztrál AC/DC (Power Up) és az indiai származású Tjinder Singh vezette brit Cornershop is (England Is A Garden). A Brit-szigeteken a 2018-as év legjobb rocklemezével befutott bristoli Idles és a legjobb 2019-es zenekari debütálást jegyző ír Fontaines D.C. posztpunk kvintettek 2020-ban is szintet tartva újráztak. Az angol Porridge Radio indie rock együttes a második nagylemezével lépett az első vonalba, a legjobb brit zenekari debütalbumot pedig az Another Sky kvartett készítette a különleges androgün énekhangú Catrin Vincent vezetésével.
A Radiohead gitáros-vokalistája, Ed O'Brien (EOB), a National-énekes Matt Berninger, a Paramore-frontlány Hayley Williams és a Savages-énekesnő Jehnny Beth is remek szólóalbumokkal debütáltak. A dalszerző-előadók közül a nyolc év után új lemezzel visszatérő amerikai Fiona Apple, a nyolc év után újra popalbumot készítő Rufus Wainwright és a nyolc év után új saját szerzeményekkel jelentkező Bob Dylan mellett a szintén amerikai Phoebe Bridgers, Moses Sumney, Sufjan Stevens és Perfume Genius, illetve a brit Baxter Dury, Laura Marling, Lianne La Havas és Nadine Shah is brillírozott. A legminőségibb mainstream pop produkcióval The Weeknd, Dua Lipa, Jessie Ware, Róisín Murphy és Rina Sawayama állt elő, a legizgalmasabb szólódebüt pedig az angol énekesnő Billy Nomates (polgári nevén: Tor Maries) nagylemeze volt a Portishead-vezér Geoff Barrow saját Invada kiadójánál. A nemzetközi színtéren jól szerepelt a francia Oklou, Yelle és Woodkid, a norvég Okay Kaya és Annie, a német Sofia Portanet, a kolumbiai születésű Ela Minus és Lido Pimienta is – sőt még egy belorusz befutót is avathattunk az amerikai lemezszerződést kapó Molchat Doma cold wave trió képében.
